Customer Reviews

I am always curious about the expectations of other consumers who write reviews, so I will try to detail mine. I specifically bought this printer because I travel frequently for work and spend a lot of time working from a hotel room. The size is fairly compact for a laser printer, and having a laser printer was a must since I print a lot of documents when I am on the road (I have gone through inject cartridges within a few days). Price was an issue since things have way of breaking more frequently when you move them around a lot. The cartridges are $70 or so at Office Depot, so don't buy them there! I have found them here on amazon for around $35 which is more than reasonable. Do yourself a favor and buy a replacement immediately as the cartridge that comes with the unit will run out quicker than expected. The speed and quality of prints is decent, and quite frankly would not have even mentioned it unless other reviewers had mentioned it. For anybody who has never used a laser printer, they have cooling fans and yes the do make some noise, but mine has never run for more than 5 minutes. I have a much older brother at home (it is 10 years old and still works great) that is much noisier and runs for much longer than this model. Quite frankly, I was pleased with how much quieter this model is. One feature that I really like is the auxiliary paper feeder for envelopes or other documents that may require a different paper size than is in the main tray. Ultimately, this is a good unit for the price. I have had it a bit over a month and it has met all of my expectations. If you want and expect a more refined unit, then you may want to consider paying more. Personally, I have no complaints.

I purchased this printer as an additional laser printer. I also own the Brother HL-2140 which is highly rated. I ended up returning this printer and will get another HL-2140. This printer is very noisy. The fan stays on for almost 1/2 hour after the last document is printed. The fan on the HL-2140 would turn off after a minute or two after the last document is printed. The fan can be heard across the room and is too much if you sit near the printer. This printer comes with a toner starter cartridge which only prints 700 pages. The higher model HL-2270DW has a 1200 page toner cartridge. This model also lacks automatic duplex which the HL-2270DW offers. Currently there are no aftermarket companies making toner for this model since it is a newer model. The HL-2140 has several companies making toner that you can get below $20 for 2,000+ page capacity. The toner on this model will run you around $40-$50 for the same capacity. If you are considering purchasing this model, I strongly suggest that you go with the HL-2140 or HL-2170. If you prefer the looks of the HL-2240, then go with the HL-2270DW which has wireless and ethernet connections, larger capacity starter cartridge and automatic duplex.

Final update: April 23rd. Starter cartridge finally says it's run completely out (though it still seems to print). That's a total of about 200 pages since I first got a message. The 3-times-Go printout shows a total of 730 pages - roughly what the starter cartridge is supposed to have, and I've now installed the hi-capacity cartridge
----- first update
Update. It's now April 11th. I've printed at least another 100 pages and things are still going well. But I've discovered another feature. In addition to the 7-times-Go (described below), there's a 3-times-Go that will print a three page report showing everything you ever wanted to know about your printer, including the amount of toner actually left.
----- original post
Like others I started getting a 'toner-low' message after maybe 450 or so pages. In looking for a way to trick the printer, I read the manual(!). It said to press the Go button seven times in a row to clear the toner-low lockout, and that once that was cleared the cartridge would continue to print until the toner was actually gone.
Worked like a charm. I'll update this when the thing actually runs completely out.
Understanding this, the way they do it makes sense: really early warning that you should order another cartridge - and a lockout that you can't ignore, keeping you from having a really bad day in the future.

Brother toner cartridges have always been excellent buys for me. The extra cost to go to the high-yield version is worth it - it lasts a LONG time.

Customer Reviews

The Brother HL-2270DW is the follow-up to the immensely popular HL-2170W. The 2170W was popular for it's amazing value and print quality. It was also wildly popular because of a neat toner trick to get it to print more pages out of the toner, even when the printer claimed the toner needed replacing. The one big knock of the 2170W was the difficult wireless setup and for being only able to use one network connection at a time-- either Ethernet or WiFi. The 2270DW adds an automatic duplexer and also improves performance.
PROS:
- Fast, fast, fast
- Great print quality
- 3 connectivity options including WiFi
- Automatic duplexer
- Supports Windows XP/2000/Vista/7, Mac OS X, and various Linux distros
- Good looking
- Great value
CONS:
- Starter toner rated at only 700 pages
- Slight curl for duplex printouts
- Uses different and more expensive toner than 2170W
- WiFi limited to 802.11b/g
Once upon a time, I used to have an NEC laser printer, a generic scanner, and an Epson photo printer all on my desk. Well that got old and I consolidated to a multifunction printer and the last 3 printers I owned have all been color inkjet MFP's. The advantages were many but the one drawback was major. The cost per page for inkjet prints became huge, even when printing in black ; white. Many color inkjet printers still use color inks when printing in black ; white, thus requiring you to replace not only the black ink cartridges, but some of the color ones as well. For me, magenta and yellow frequently ran out, even though we ONLY ever printed in black ; white. I'd finally had enough and sought out a solution. As recently as 3 weeks ago, I was able to purchase the 2170W for my parents for a great price and was going to get one myself but they all went out of stock or had gone up in price. Then I found out that they were being discontinued and the 2270DW was the newer model. I pulled the trigger and have not looked back.
2270DW vs. 2170W
The difference between the older 2170W and the newer 2270DW isn't limited to just the change in exterior color. Considering that the base MSRP remains the same, the 2270DW is an outstanding bargain. The 2270DW is slightly faster at 27ppm vs. 22ppm for the 2170W. The 2270DW also uses a 200MHz processor vs. the old 181MHz CPU. The dimensions are identical except that the 2270DW is half an inch taller and happens to weigh almost a half a pound more. I'm guessing the automatic duplexer is responsible for the slightly larger size. Brother also decided to get cheap and included a starter toner rated for only 700 pages, whereas the 2170W was 1000 pages or 2 full reams of paper. The 2270DW also adds GDI printing
INSTALL
The toner and drum are pre-installed but you have to remove it and prep (shake) it before use. I found the Quick Start Guide to be pretty clear and useful for all three connection methods. WiFi configuration is still a bit hokey, but it was easy enough in my opinion.
(USB)
The USB install was a cinch. Install the drivers off of the disc or download them from Brother's website, then plug the USB cable (not included) into your computer and you're good to go.
(Ethernet)
Though the printer's wireless abilities are nice to have, I prefer to use the Ethernet connection to plug the printer directly into my wireless router. This still allows me to print wirelessly from my laptop and via a hardware switch from my desktop. I also don't have to fiddle with the wireless settings and have a stronger, more reliable connection through my router. Using the install wizard, I selected Peer-to-Peer Network Printer as my preferred network print type and was off and running. I performed the same setup on my laptop over WiFi and installed perfectly. One note, I could not quickly find the MAC address to the Ethernet port so I disabled MAC filtering on my router temporarily. If you don't use MAC filtering, then you have nothing to worry about. Afterwards, I found out that you can print the settings from within the Brother print driver and find the MAC address.
(WiFi)
I think a lot of people think they need a WiFi printer to print wireless but most people have wireless routers already that they can just connect the printer to with an Ethernet cable. A printer with WiFi is really only useful if it won't be attached to your router and want it completely independent. As with the 2170W, the 2270DW requires it to be temporarily connected by USB cable or Ethernet to configure the wireless settings, unless, your wireless router supports WiFi Protected Setup or AOSS. The installation wizard on the CD-ROM is pretty straight-forward and I found the install to be painless. Although, if you are using MAC filtering and not broadcasting your SSID, you'll probably want to reverse those temporarily to configure it then switch it back. This is especially true if you are trying to configure the WiFi AFTER you've already set it up by Ethernet and using BRAdmin to do it. To find the internal wireless card's MAC address, hold down the Go button for 10 seconds until it prints a network config page that will enable/disable WiFi and also show you the MAC address. I don't really need WiFi so I only performed the install for the sake of reviewing the procedure.
PERFORMANCE
Time to print has been improved on the 2270DW by nearly 2 seconds, so less time warming up from sleep or off. The actual print speed improvement is less noticeable but 27ppm is insanely fast. I thought my Consumer Reports 1 rated, HP All-in-One Printer was pretty fast, but the 2270DW is at least twice as fast. Text output, even really tiny fonts, looked great. Graphics were also very good. The 2270DW still supports the most current PCL printer language, developed by HP. Oddly though, Brother decided to add GDI capabilities, which is also known as host-based printing and is typically used on low-end printers that put all the printer processing burden on the PC, rather than on the printer's hardware. For example, Brother's bare-bones, cheap 2140 laser printer is GDI only. The 2270DW already has PCL 6 support so I don't see any benefit to having GDI. Even if using a high-end PC might possibly achieve faster to-print speeds, I would think the extra load put on the PC would be a hindrance over just letting the printer's hardware take care of it. I would personally never buy a GDI-only printer. Lastly, given how recently this printer was released, I'm disappointed they didn't include the better 802.11n Wifi support.
NOISE
The 2270DW is noisier than the 2170W, so if you didn't like the 2170W for it's noise, then you definitely won't like the noise from the 2270DW. The fan does stay on for several minutes after it prints but shuts off eventually and then becomes totally silent. The sounds of a laser printer are a welcome change from the wonky noises that my inkjet printers made.
DUPLEXER
If you decide to use the automatic duplexer, it will add more time to your printouts, but what a convenience to not have to manually flip over sheets of paper. Brother rates the duplexer speed to 10 sides per minute. I've always liked the idea of using both sides of a sheet of paper. Save them trees! The duplexer on the 2270DW works well and I have not had any jams, knock on the wood of one of those trees I just saved. Aside from having network printing, the duplexer is my favorite feature of the 2270DW. The only downside to using the duplexer is that it has a noticeable curl. A commenter suggested that heavier paper (24 lb) as opposed to the more commonly used 20 lb paper might help reduce the curl and paper jams.
SOFTWARE
The drivers for the 2270DW include a lot of customization options for your printer, including using the Toner Saver Mode, which is similar to Draft Mode in inkjet printers. Unless you are printing a resume, the Toner Saver Mode is more than good enough for daily print jobs. Additionally, Brother laser printers have the ability to upgrade firmware. Given that the 2270DW is brand new, this is an important ability to note because bug fixes and performance improvements are sure to become available down the road. The most current version of the firmware as of this writing is v1.02. You can also install various administrator utilities for configuration and monitoring (BRAdmin). I used BRAdmin to change the Sleep time from 3 minutes to 2. Another neat feature is that you can use web based management by putting the IP address of your printer into a web browser. This is a great way to review settings and other useful information like how many pages you've printed, remaining drum life, serial number, and firmware version.
COST PER PAGE
The high-yield (2600 pages) genuine Brother toner (TN450) from Amazon is currently $46, which equates to about 1.8 cents per page. That is ridiculous! It is so much cheaper than most inkjets, which can cost between 4 cents and 8 cents per page of text. The only bummer is that the Brother drum unit (DR420) currently costs $84. At that price, if my 2270DW's drum needed replacing, I would probably just end up buying a new printer. The drum is rated at 12,000 pages, which is 24 reams of paper. A lot of factors go into when the drum unit should be replaced but given that I personally don't print more than a ream of paper per year, it would last me 24 years, or basically the life of the printer. Factoring in the cost of a new drum unit, I calculated the... Read more›

I dumped my one year old HP 8000 wireless inkjet when it became obvious it was going to cost me two hundred dollars a year for even minimum use. You can read my review on that pig's product page for more details.
As with most users I have no expertise in wireless. Every time I add a device, it's plug-and-pray time. My network is run through an old Asus router which supports only WEP and WPA, not WPS. I don't know exactly what that means, other than that WPS apparently is a new standard which improves the installation process. My home network has slowly grown to inlude a W7 desktop, a Vista laptop, two other XP desktops (I never throw away old computers), one wireless adapter for my TV and bluray player, and one wireless printer.
I have to say that this Brother printer was the easiest installation experience I have ever had with any piece of wireless hardware. For once, a manufacturer went to obvious effort to make certain the manual was clear and coherent. Every step on every page is exactly representative of what was shown on the screen [Update: Mac users, see Rich Hayhurst's comment (below)]. Every paragraph is bulleted so that if you are directed to skip a step based on your particular configuration there is no confusion as to where to proceed.
The net result is that, though I could not use what is billed as the one-button WPS setup and had to input the SSID and network key manually (I'm glad I wrote those down a couple years ago when I first set up the router), the Brother printer was recognized and up and running on all three active computers in less than twenty minutes, total. All for little more effort than inserting the installation disk in each drive.
The print quality is excellent, the automatic duplex functions flawlessly, the machine is fast, quiet and has a very small footprint. I am hoping its economy and durability live up to the rest of my initial experience with this great little printer.
p.s.: Anybody want to buy a wireless inkjet, cheap?
Update 12/2/10 -- I do notice the paper curling (due to heat, I'm sure) some other reviewers have described. It's possible a heavier weight paper would lessen this but I haven't had a chance to experiment, yet. This curling might be an issue for business users who are concerned about quality of presentation in printed correspondence. It's perfectly acceptable for my general personal uses.
One minor tip: If you get this printer, keep in mind the paper feed in this unit is towards the front of the tray. I'm accustomed to the top of the sheet feeding towards the rear of the tray. I was printing adhesive labels and having alignment problems until I realized this difference.

Customer Reviews

I've had this printer for a whole 10 hours, and only printed about 5-6 pages so far, but it's awesome! Setup on my Mac was a breeze. Hooked the printer up to the network and immediately got an IP with DHCP. I then attempted to use the standard PCL driver with a standard JetDirect port on my Mac running OSx 10.6.. but don't do this.. it seems that printing a single page will cause the printer to just print a blank page... and then another one.. and then..won't stop :P. Ohwell.. After loading the proper drivers, Mac nicely finds the printer over bonjour and automagically sets it up as a printer and scanner (whoo hoo).
The Ups:
- Fast printing -- From deep sleep to wake up it takes about 20 seconds to get the first page out (pretty darn decent for a printer under 200 bucks)
- Energy saving -- in deep sleep it consumes less than a watt
- Solid drivers/software that doesn't get in the way.. for mac at least (not sure about windows)
- Painless duplex printing
- Copying without the need of a computer
- Super light (25 lbs?) and small footprint
- Toner cartridges that don't cost an arm and a leg
- A button on the printer that stops the current print job (AND actually works.. unlike some lexmark and hp printers I've encountered which cancel jobs that HAVEN'T been started yet.. ugh.)
The Downs:
- Automatic document feeding can't scan double sided... but kind of expected, although.. you can tell it to scan a stack of (one-sided) documents and print double-sided documents
- The scanner lid seems to be spring-loaded, so be gentle when closing the flatbed scanner
- The scanner lid only opens 45 degrees not 90 degrees... maybe this is normal.. but my xerox copier goes all the way up.. ohwell)
-Getting this printer to work in Linux (ubuntu 11.04) was a little painful-- had to install the cups and lpr driver from the website.. but it's decently document on Brother's website, so check it out (hint: even though ubuntu "recommends" using the 7045 driver, dont.. use 7065dn.. using the 7045 will just send the printer data, and then the printer will just go back to sleep without printing anything).
So even with all the things that I don't like about the printer, I still highly recommend the printer, given the price and how many features brother packed into this model. I would totally recommend this printer to anyone in the need of b/w network printer.
EDIT: 7/31/2011--
The printer doesn't seem to have airprint support (yet), so those of you who want to print directly from you iphone/ipad/iwhatever.. sorry -- it won't work out of the box.. you'll probably need to setup a print server. I'll probably try doing this on a dd-wrt instance. Also, I tried using the Brother iPrint;Scan app on my iPhone, but it didn't work with this printer.. ohwell.
EDIT: 9/30/2011 5:05pm--
According to the handy-dandy printer statistics webpage built into the printer, I've printed 442 pages so far, and the printer is telling me that I'm running low on toner. I'm using the toner that came with the printer, (TN420) which is advertised to last about 1200 pages. I don't believe that I've printed any images or anything that requires a ton of toner, so I'm a bit confused on why I'm low on toner. Still-- Printer/scanner is great.. maybe just a defective toner unit that got shipped with the printer?
EDIT: 9/30/2011 5:13pm --
I found this "toner save" option in the web interface, so I enabled it. (Oops-- forgot about that. Printed out a page and in my opinion, it looks the same as when the "toner save" option was disabled. Hopefully I'll get better performance out of toner cartridges now.

With great sadness, I retired my HP LaserJet 5p after 17 years of great service. It finally died. I had fun taking it apart, but that's another story. I was always happy with that printer, and the service I got from HP when I bought it was terrific. So my first choice was another HP Laser. I had a terrible Brother Laser printer prior to the HP. Plus, the HP never needs a drum replacement (the Brother's drum is slated to last only 12,000 pages.)
However, I had heard recently from multiple sources that in recent years, HP had gone downhill in quality and service. And the reviews I read (and I read hundreds of them) overall gave better scores to Brother Lasers, which usually cost less than HP. So after weeks of research, I bought the DCP-7065 for only $179. The price dropped to $129 3 weeks later - what a great deal! Now it is back to $156. Watch for sales!
Here is my review after owning this for almost a month.
Installation
- It's my first networked printer, and I was nervous. In about an hour, I unpacked it, set it up, followed the Quick Start instructions, and installed it on 1 desktop (vista) and 2 laptops (xp-pro). Success!
- The only problems I encountered were needing to install the scanner software twice on the desktop, and the scanner software not installing on the laptops. I didn't re-try when it failed on the laptops. Since I won't scan from the laptops (only my desktop), it was a non issue to me. If I ever need to, I will try again to install it on the laptops. Since it installed on the second try after a re-boot on my desktop, I assume the same will be true for the laptops.
- Now I can sit in bed on the first floor and print on the second floor. No more running out to the inkjet, connecting it to the laptop via USB, printing, disconnecting and returning to the living room or bedroom. Hooray.
- Another note - I have not downloaded the latest drivers and firmware yet (as other reviewers suggested), just used what was on the CD. I should, and will eventually, but so far it prints just fine.
Print Quality ; Speed
- It's a Laser. Therefore, it has great print quality on the best setting. Eyeball test only - I didn't look with a magnifying glass or anything. With as cheap as toner is (even more so if you buy aftermarket toner cartridges), I am not going to use toner-save mode.
- I printed a photograph, and it was OK, nothing special. I mean, this printer is not for photographs, but it will render graphics in black ; white docs decently, not great. It is NOT a photo printer. Print your photos at Wal-Mart or some place like that. They will look great and be cheaper than printing at home, anyway.)
- Speed? It is FAST! Love it!
Wireless connectivity
- I had no problems connecting this through my router following the Quick Start Instructions, and all of our laptops can now print from anywhere in the house. This is my favorite thing about this printer.
- I don't know why anyone would need wi-fi instead of Ethernet, UNLESS you can't physically place your printer near your router (it needs a CAT5 cable from the printer to the router). That is the only time that the Ethernet connection to a router would not suffice. Personally, I would not spend the extra money for 802.11 wi-fi (the MFC-7860 costs about $100 more than this printer ($180 vs. $280 at the time I purchased). Note - the HL-5370DW ($180) is wireless, but does NOT have a copier/scanner, and also has lower ratings. For comparison purposes, HP has a wireless all-in-one laser printer with decent ratings, m1217nfw, for about $225.)
Duplexing
- I don't know how often I will use it, but it was easy to use and very fast. Very cool. I like it. I have not tried booklet printing yet.
Noise
- Yes, it has a cooling fan that makes some noise. So what? All printers make noise. It didn't seem any louder to me than any other printer. I didn't even notice the fan was running until it cut off. It's not a big deal to me, anyway, as it is in my office, not my bedroom. My HP DeskJet 6940 at work is much louder while printing (but since there is no cooling fan it makes zero noise after finishing.
Energy
- Like some other reviewers said, it made my lights flicker when waking up from deep sleep mode. As long as it doesn't blow a fuse, that is a minor annoyance that does not bother me much. Most of the time I am not in the same room as the printer anyway, since 90% of my printing is done from my laptop wirelessly. I chose to not hook it up via the same surge protector the computer was on. Straight to the wall instead. My house is only 20 years old, so I don't have ancient wiring. This might be an issue for some people but not for me.
- Some people like that the printer has an on/off switch. But since it goes into deep sleep mode when not in use, you will probably never turn the printer off (except for vacations). If you did turn it off, and you are printing wirelessly, you would need to go to the printer and turn it on before printing wirelessly - defeating the purpose of a wireless printer!
Copying
- I really like using the auto-feeder to make copies of multiple pages; what a time saver. Our all-in-one inkjet is just a flatbed, so you have to do one page at a time.
- I wish there was a 1-button copy function. You have to hit a few buttons to get a photo-copy. It is a minor annoyance. Also, the settings are not easy to navigate, so you can end up wasting time and paper because a copy comes out too dark or too light. I'm not crazy about it as a copier, except for the ADF.
- Is there a difference in copy quality between the flatbed and ADF? I can't tell.
Scanning
- As other Brother reviewers have mentioned, the scanner cover's springs are tight, and if you are not careful, the cover will snap down hard, possibly breaking it sooner rather than later. I recommend using both hands to insure it closes gently.
- Scanning photos - I have not tried this yet (will update later)
OCR
- This is a mixed bag. On the one hand, scanning in a 5 page document through the auto-feeder and having the OCR software scan it was fast and easy. A process that would have taken me more than 5 minutes on our Canon inkjet all-in-one took maybe 30 seconds on the Brother 7065.
- Unfortunately, I HATE the included OCR software itself. It is really bad. It rendered almost every capital "I" as the number "1" and had many other errors as well. It does not give you the option to correct anything on the fly like OmniPage does. So the time saved on scanning was lost on manually finding and correcting errors. I will try installing OmniPage Pro 10, which I already own, and see if that works with this scanner. I do a lot of OCR scanning, so this is a real inconvenience for me. I am really hating this aspect so far.
Auto-document feeder.
- Wonderful. Fast. So much better than a flatbed scanner. I like that the lid of the ADF can be closed when not in use, so it looks neater and doesn't collect dust inside the feeder.
Toner ; Drum Costs
- I have not replaced the toner yet. I plan on buying compatible toner, which (almost always) worked fine with my HP. If I encounter any issues, I will come back and update this review. Even buying Brother brand toner, it will be cheaper than HP brand toner. But since there are plenty of generic toner sellers for both brands, I think this should be a wash. A genuine TN450 cartridge is about $42, and generic toner cartridges are between $15-20 on Amazon via many vendors.
- If you plan on printing lots of pages (say, over 500 pages per month), consider buying an HP. The drum for the Brother needs to be replaced at 12,000 pages. The Brother brand drum is about $100, but the off-brand is about $30. I expect to go for several years before I need to replace the drum.
- This printer comes with a TN420 cartridge (supposed to print 1200 pages). But alas, it is not filled all the way. It is a starter cartridge, and I got "toner low" messages after fewer than 500 pages.
- It will give a "replace toner" message and stop printing, even though there is still toner in the cartridge. Apparently, all Brother Laser printers do this. See reviews of other printers - they all have a convoluted work-around, but it is not easy to find it. See page 30 of the "Basic User's Guide" to find out how to defeat the message and enable you to keep on printing until the toner is really gone. I could not find these instructions anywhere online at Brother's web site, and since this is a newer printer, couldn't find it via Google either. Brother's web site simply says you should buy a new toner cartridge, and it has to be a genuine Brother cartridge.
- UPDATE ON TONER (12/14/2011) - I bought 2 generic replacement toner cartridges for about $13 each online via Amazon. The first leaked toner everywhere - a complete mess. I got my money back from Amazon. The second one works fine. They are way cheaper than the Brother toner (which of course, is more reliable, if you want to spend the money.)
Build ; other miscellaneous stuff
- I like that the paper is enclosed in a drawer. I always hated the "paper stands up in the back of the printer" style that Canon and other companies use. Also, many HPs have the paper on the bottom in an open tray. I like the closed tray.
- It comes with 32MB of RAM. That is great for a printer at this price point.
- One annoyance - you have to look at the LCD panel at just the right angle or you can't read anything. Not a huge problem, but annoying.
- Missing Cables - True, it... Read more›

Customer Reviews

This printer satisfies every gripe I have about printers. Usually there's some quality about one that makes you say, "It would have been perfect, but if only it didn't have this one problem." Each aspect of this printer is as good or better than pretty much all other printers out there at this time. And I'm a person who is relentless when it comes to researching products before buying them for myself.
Resolution: It goes up to 1200x1200, which is the highest out there currently. 1200x1200 is best for text. But it also does 2400x600, which is typically better for graphics. Most other laser printers only do up to 2400x600.
Toner: Cheap! You can pick up "compatible" cartridges for $30 now which will last 8000 pages. This is the cheapest of any printer I've seen. Other printers (such as HP) cost $70 for 2000-3000 pages even with a "compatible" cartridge.
Print quality: Excellent. I used a magnifying glass to try to detect any imperfections in text or graphics but didn't find much. No white raster lines, "jaggies", smudging, bleeding, noise or random dots printed anywhere. Large black rectangles are solid and consistent. Gray scale patterns didn't appear to have any defects.
Memory: 32MB. Most other laser printers only do up to 8MB currently. You need memory if you want to do full-page graphics. It lets you expand memory by adding an inexpensive ($30 new) 512MB memory card. Many printers don't even allow expansion, or they force you to buy their own special memory cards at a huge price.
Paper: Doesn't jam. Easy to load. Has a manual feeder also. Allows 2 extra paper feeders if you want. Most printers don't allow that.
Duplex mode: Fast, easy to use, saves paper. I'll never buy another printer without it.
Paper curl: You wouldn't notice it unless you were specifically looking for it. Barely detectable even with duplex mode printing and cheap paper. Even envelopes print with hardly any curl.
Rear output tray: Has it! Many printers don't. Its predecessor model didn't. This "straight out the back" mode allows you to print envelopes, cards, and special paper without ever bending it if you really want perfection.
On/Off switch: Has one! I mention this because many printers don't. Without one, a printer is left on all the time, which uses 10 watts of power (not much, but still) and reduces product lifetime somewhat.
Lifetime: The predecessor model (HL-5250DN) has great reviews. People said they're still using it 3 years later. The HL-5370DW has just about the same design, and I expect it will last a while. Not a cheap, throw-away printer like you often see.
Networking: Haven't tried it. But it has it, and it will become very useful when I get a wireless laptop to add to my existing desktop PC (both will need to share it).
Languages: It speaks both Postscript 3 and PCL. That guarantees it will be compatible with any OS out there, even older ones. And since it doesn't use "host based" language like cheaper printers do, it won't eat up your CPU and slow things down during printing.
In conclusion, this is a well-designed, high quality printer with low long-term operating costs, and I'm completely satisfied. I'll add an update to this review if I ever encounter problems with it.
- Steve

Pros:
super fast print speeds - this thing is crazy fast even on duplex
fast warm up
excellent print quality
great variety of print options (duplex, booklet, scaling, header/footer print, watermark, multiple page [2 in 1, 4 in 1, 9 in 1, 16 in 1, 25 in 1 and the reverse 1 in 2x2, 1 in 3x3, 1 in 4x4 and 1 in 5x5] - it has some options about running macros, but I haven't read anything on it yet
easy wireless setup, very easy
sharp tech support - brother has NOT outsourced their tech support. I had someone on the phone in 1 minute who knew the product.
wireless - I was actually going to hard wire it, but my cable wasn't long enough and it would have taken a circus act to get it hooked up
from magazine reviews it's my understanding that the cost/page is cheap
cheap - I bought it during a $70 off sale at the home depot of office products
comes w/a standard toner cartridge instead of a starter toner cartridge
Cons:
ever so slight paper curl w/one-sided printing
slightly more pronounced paper curl when printing duplex automatically (it has a manual duplex feature too)
the print options don't appear to allow you to save your common settings as favorites
The paper curl wasn't an issue for me, but I remember reading reviews on other printers where this was important to them.
I'll try and upload some pics so you can judge the curl for yourself.

Customer Reviews

Small footprint, well integrated Ethernet access, large paper storage space, inexpensive (compared to HP) toner, and a document feeder, all at a very low price. In my past experience with Brother printers and fax machines they are extremely reliable and easy to setup and that is why I chose to go with a Brother. With a infrequently used copier the inkjet versions will clog and as the ink dries out in the print heads and they are a lot slower and in the long run a lot more expensive with the cost of consumables.
Setup was fast and easy and the Nuance scanner software is great and an improvement over that provided with older models from Brother and the software from HP which is so bloated that it often fails to even install properly.
Nice feature is the ability to register a PC by name when installing the software. Then when scanning a document you can select the destination computer from the Brother and push the scan to the desired PC. Very easy and very slick implementation and it works!
Nuance software also provides for scanning to the customary TIFF or JPEG formats but by default will scan and output a PDF file which is a real timesaver for scanning a document to email to someone. I would pay for the free Nuance software for this feature alone.
Printing to the Brother MFC7360N wakes it out of sleep mode (actuall "deep sleep") and outputs a page in seconds. It is roughly four times as fast as my HP 4000TN printer to output the first page. The Brother does suck up a lot of power when it comes out of sleep mode and the alarm goes off on the UPS that is on the same circuit. I suspect it probably should be on its own circuit or a 20amp circuit to avoid any problems with other devices.
Scanning is very fast and with standard large images works as expected. With text pages though the borders have a shadow pattern on the page on both sides that is generated within the machine. For OCR or most images this is not going to be a problem but not great for making scans of text pages for electronic archival purposes. This problem only affects scans and does not happen when making a copy of the same printed page so it may be a problem with the Nuance software.
It also is extremely noisy with a loud hum and loud fan noise when it is first turned on or after a page is printed. It goes into standard and then sleep and then deep sleep mode and the fan does not shut off until it reaches "deep sleep". The MFC really needs to be in a separate room with a door you can close. Turning the unit on and not even printing or scanning it goes into standard mode and I timed how long it took for the fan to shut off. It takes a full 11 minutes before the machine goes into deep sleep mode and its very loud fan shuts off. Has to be a defect in the design as the cooling fan cycles even when the MFC7360N is first turned on and nothing has been printed. This could be fixed with a firmware upgrade but apparently Brother has not bothered to produce one.
I paid $179.97 for this printer on August 24, 2011 and a week later it is priced at $114.99 which, if you can put it in a separate room, makes this a good value with the low cost of the Brother consumables.
The noise is loud and atypical of laser printers. Most recently I bought a Canon 4570dn all in one and after it prints a page it shuts down immediately and it is completely silent. The 11 minutes of fan noise from the majority of Brother laserjet printers is a fairly recent defect as I have had other laserjet printers from Brother that did not exhibit this behavior and were extremely reliable.

Only had this printer for about three weeks but I like it so far. Warm up is quick, about 15 seconds from cold start to the first printed copy. Have it installed as a network printer so I can print wirelessly from my notebook through my router. I like the fact that Brother has one of the less expensive toner cartridges on the market. I would recommed this multi-function printer to anyone in a home enviroment (where I use it) to a small office. We have several Brother printers similar to this one at work and use them mostly for fax and some light copying.

Customer Reviews

Pros: Fast and easy installation; very speedy printing; print quality very good for text; high capacity toner cartridges available (compatible cartridges are reasonably priced).
Cons: Although Brother added a "straight through paper path" apparently for the purpose of dealing with criticisms of a previous model that envelopes and thicker media were crinkled or somewhat rolled, the straight through paper path does not solve the envelope problem. The crinkling of envelopes occurs because the intake feed roller presses the envelope too tightly, causing the envelope to billow as it passes, and the latter part of the envelope is unavoidably crinkled.
Conclusion: This is a great value for a user who does not need to print uncrinkled envelopes with this printer. This printer remains useful to me because I have another printer that handles envelopes well.

I have about a thousand pages through this machine now and it has done well. If you need a simple black and white printer that automatically printson both sides of the paper it is a great deal. Prints very fast on single sided and reasonably fast still on double sided printing. Sharpness is good and documents look nice. Software interface is simple to use but offers a lot of features. No intrusive software like HP which is a real pleasure. This is the second Brother printer I have in my office and I like them both.
2010 01 05 update: Still going strong! Everytime I look at this printer I am filled with joy for how well it does. Have made it through my first toner cartridge and ordered and OEM and an aftermarket toner cartridge both from amazon. The after market one works great too. I went to amazon to order HP ink today but instead I am ordering my third Brother priner today to replace the HP machine instead of buying more HP ink. I just love everything about the Brother pinters I own.
